The Russian invaders are currently conducting two tactical operations as part of the offensive on Pokrovsk and are trying to encircle the Ukrainian Armed Forces positions between Mirnograd and Grodovka. ISW explained how the occupiers might try to capture Pokrovsk.
The first tactical operation is taking place along the Novogrodovka-Grodovka line to the east of Pokrovsk. To advance to the outskirts of the city, the Russians must first capture Mirnograd.
The second tactical operation is being carried out along the Selidovo-Ukrainsk-Gornyak line to the southeast of Pokrovsk. Here, the enemy is trying to expand its group and eliminate vulnerable spots for counterattacks by the Defense Forces.
According to analysts, the Russian military command is likely considering both operations as prerequisites for the start of intensive offensive actions on Pokrovsk itself.
Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrsky said on August 29 that the most intense fighting in this direction was taking place in several places at once:
- on the eastern outskirts of Grodovka (east of Pokrovsk);
- southwest of Grodovka near Krasny Yar, within Novogrodovka (southeast of Pokrovsk);
- immediately east of Selidovo near Mykhailivka (southeast of Pokrovsk).
The Institute for the Study of War has observed occupation army successes in these areas in recent days. The enemy recently encircled Ukrainian positions southeast of Pokrovsk along the Karlovskoye Reservoir and forced the Ukrainian Armed Forces to retreat from limited positions in this area.
The Russians are likely hoping to achieve a similar effect by attempting to encircle Ukrainian positions between Mirnohrad and Grodovka, although it remains unclear whether the invaders will be able to maintain a relatively rapid pace of advance through the comparatively large city of Mirnohrad and its environs.
