It is noted that the warrant was issued at the request of the Venezuelan authorities, who accuse 75-year-old Gonzalez of a number of crimes, including conspiracy, falsification of documents and usurpation of powers.

This was the latest step in the escalation of repression against the opposition in the month since the announcement by election commission representatives loyal to the ruling party of Maduro's re-election for a third presidential term.

Before this, Gonzalez failed to appear three times to answer questions from prosecutors. The last time was last Friday. The AP news agency notes that the opposition leader has not appeared in public at all since the day after the elections.

Gonzalez questioned the prosecutors' actions due to the lack of due process. He also accused Attorney General Tarek William Saab, a longtime ally of Maduro, of being a "political prosecutor" who "pre-judges."

Gonzalez also declined a summons for questioning, claiming that they had not specified the conditions under which he should appear.

Recall that in late July, protests broke out in Venezuela over the results of the presidential elections, in which the authorities declared the victory of the incumbent President Nicolas Maduro. The opposition believes the results to be falsified.

It was also reported that the United States had previously recognized opposition candidate Edmund Gonzalez as the winner.

And in August, it became known that Maduro accused the opposition of allegedly preparing a "terrorist attack."
