The Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service has warned of active cyber operations conducted by Russian hackers. It is noted that they belong to the Russian unit of the military unit 29 155 GRU. It is reported that it is focused on disrupting Western aid and tracking the logistics routes of arms supplies to Ukraine.
According to the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service, the cyber operations of the Russians are aimed at governments and critical infrastructure of Western countries. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans stressed the importance of exposing the methods of this unit so that governments and companies that help Ukraine can protect themselves from such attacks.
"Together with our partners, we have decided to expose the modus operandi of this notorious Russian cyber unit. This way, everyone will see how they operate. Yes, people can arm themselves against these violent attacks and espionage. Not only governments, but also manufacturers and suppliers of military equipment to Ukraine," he noted.
Vice Admiral Peter Reesink, director of the Dutch department, noted that although the Netherlands has not yet experienced large-scale cyber attacks on vital infrastructure, the threat remains a reality that cannot be ignored. Since the Netherlands is an important transit country for supplies to Ukraine, Russian hackers can target its logistics sector.
"This creates a threat that we increasingly have to take into account," he said.
It is reported that the Russian unit of the military unit 29155 GRU is also known for its actions related to physical sabotage and attempted coups in Europe. Western intelligence agencies link him to the poisoning of Sergei Skripach in the UK in 2018, an attempted coup in Montenegro and an assassination attempt on a Bulgarian arms dealer.
The Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service stressed that Russian hackers are trying to obtain information about Western military supplies in order to undermine their effectiveness. The point is that such operations are part of a large-scale campaign by Russia against support for Ukraine, which includes not only cyberattacks, but also physical sabotage in Western territories.
It is known that the US accuses Russian hackers of cyberattacks against Ukraine and NATO countries in anticipation of a full-scale invasion in 2022. Recently, Russian cybercriminals tried to hack the email of the former US ambassador to Ukraine.
