One of the topics was tensions in the South China Sea.

Admiral Sam Paparo, head of the US Indo-Pacific Command, held a video meeting with Wu Yanan, commander of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Southern Theater, the Chinese government said.

"We held an in-depth exchange of views on issues of common concern," the Chinese Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The two sides discussed important security issues, including tensions in the South China Sea. Paparo urged China to abandon dangerous tactics in the region to avoid escalation. He noted the importance of continuing talks to avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations.

The meeting followed agreements reached during US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's visit to Beijing in August. The United States is seeking to resume regular military dialogue with China, particularly over tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

US-China Relations

The relationship between the United States and China is complex and tense. It spans trade, politics, security, and technology.

The two countries are global rivals, and their relationship is marked by economic competition and geopolitical tensions, particularly over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and human rights.

Tensions have increased since the trade war that began in 2018 and conflicts over technology sanctions. Military risks, particularly in the waters around Taiwan, also remain important, and diplomatic efforts are aimed at avoiding misunderstandings and conflicts.

The tension in the relationship has also been affected by Russian-Chinese political ties, with the United States repeatedly noting the reputational risks to Beijing helping Moscow circumvent sanctions imposed on Russia for its war in Ukraine.
