"The Ministry of Natural Resources is cooperating with PJSC "AK Kyivvodokanal" to develop a set of measures in case of possible deterioration of water quality near drinking water intakes. But we draw attention to the fact that there are currently no such risks," the department emphasizes.
The situation with Desna pollution
The ministry reported that, according to data as of September 9, pollution in the Desna River has accumulated within Chernigov at the site of the destroyed automobile bridge and has moved to Kolichevka (180 km), however, "there are few cases of intense odor and fish deaths here."
The possibility of installing additional aeration units to saturate the river with oxygen downstream is being considered.
"The reasons for the accumulation of pollution within the destroyed automobile bridge were the natural features of the river bottom relief and the nature of the flow (mixing in layers by depth)," the ministry reported.
It is also indicated that the measures taken prevent the movement of pollution downstream, but "this is not yet enough to stop the death of fish at the site of pollution concentration."
The department also reported that before flowing into the Desna River, the pollution moved along the Seim River "a solid mass of dark water."
"When it entered the Desna on August 27, it began to dilute and fragment. The speed of movement was 10-35 km/day (depending on the nature of the sinuosity of the riverbed)," the Ministry of Natural Resources reported.
As for the fish kill, such cases are currently observed in Chernigov, the villages of Makoshino, Ushnya, Boromiki, Voznesenskoye and Saltykova Devitsa. In total, about 17.5 tons of dead fish have already been collected in the Chernigov region.
"In the city of Chernigov and the village of Maksim, a slight decrease in oxygen is recorded, which is within 6-7.76 mgO2/dm³. According to the results of laboratory tests, samples from the Desna River from the mouth of the Seim River to the city of Chernigov, an increased content of nitrogen, iron, manganese and oxygen deficiency were established," the ministry said.
Let us recall that at the end of August, the State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine recorded a significant excess of maximum permissible concentrations of pollutants in the Seim River.
As previously reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, pollution in the Seim could have entered from the territory of the Russian Federation.
On September 6, it became known that polluting organic substances reached a section of the Desna River in Chernihiv.
On September 7, the Kyiv City State Administration announced that the situation with water quality in Kyiv is under control. Specialists are developing a set of measures in case the quality of drinking water deteriorates.
And on September 9, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the condition of the water in the Seim River has been improving in recent days. In addition, the department added, the situation with water pollution in the Desna is also stabilizing.
