Ukrainians are encouraged to find work
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Ukrainian refugees to look for work. He noted that thanks to the Job-Turbo initiative, introduced by the German Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the number of employed Ukrainians has grown to 200,000 people.
"But there would be several hundred thousand more, so to speak. That's why I would like the work to be done," the Chancellor said.
The head of the German government noted that immediate employment in a position similar to the one a person had in Ukraine is not always possible. However, he called for considering part-time employment options as a first step towards full integration into the German labor market.
The Job-Turbo initiative for the accelerated integration of Ukrainian refugees into the labor market in Germany provides for the organization of support for Ukrainians so that language training takes place in parallel with work. The government also called on employers to hire Ukrainian refugees, even if their knowledge of German is not yet at a high level.
Such measures should increase the employment rate among Ukrainian refugees. There are 1.1 million Ukrainians with temporary protection in Germany. Only 27% (as of the first quarter of 2024) of able-bodied refugees from Ukraine have found work, which is significantly lower than in many EU countries.
What kind of work can Ukrainian refugees count on in Germany
We asked experts from the EWL Migration Platform whether there are more options for work without knowledge of the language in Germany given the Job-Turbo initiative.
"We have not yet seen a significant increase in the number of such vacancies. At the same time, German employers are gradually increasing job offers for Ukrainians who do not know German. This is also due to the fact that a certain number of Ukrainians are already working at these enterprises, who help their fellow countrymen adapt," says Margarita Nesterenko.
There are significantly more vacancies for Ukrainian citizens who know German at a basic level or English.
"Most often, they offer work in logistics warehouses, enterprises in the automotive industry, food industry enterprises, and there are vacancies in the pharmaceutical industry," she notes.
According to Margarita Nesterenko, the minimum hourly rate for such work is usually 12.41 euros gross (before taxes) per hour. But there are also many offers where the salary is 13-13.5 euros gross per hour.
Recall that we wrote about why it is difficult for Ukrainian doctors to obtain permission to practice in Germany. Since February 2022, more than 1,600 doctors from Ukraine have arrived in the country, but only 187 have received a full license to practice medicine.
