US aid to Ukraine worth almost $6 billion is at risk. These funds may disappear by the end of September.
As the Associated Press writes, to prevent this, Congress needs to decide to expand the Pentagon's authority to send weapons from its stockpiles to Ukraine.
It is noted that the White House has asked Congress to include funding authority in any resolution that lawmakers plan to pass before the end of the fiscal year (before September 30) in order to fund the federal government and prevent its shutdown. As added, officials hope that the authority can be extended for another year.
The Pentagon is currently considering other options to protect aid to Ukraine if Congress does not vote on funding. What exactly these measures will be is still unknown.
According to sources, just over $4 billion in long-term funding is currently available to provide assistance to Ukraine. It expires on September 30, 2025. The funds are used to pay for long-term arms supply contracts.
