It is noted that Lower Austria suffered the most from the extreme weather conditions. Thus, as a result of severe flooding, entire settlements were under water. So far, the weather situation continues to worsen.
"According to emergency services, the first dams have broken, including in Gadersdorf and Pottenbrunn. The population is being evacuated, and sometimes help is only possible from the air," the publication reports.
About 10,000 emergency service personnel have been involved in rescue work in Lower Austria. They are rescuing people from roofs, pumping water out of houses, and clearing roads of fallen trees.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Negammer added that more than 2,000 military personnel have been deployed to help rescuers.
"The situation remains serious and the situation - especially in Lower Austria - is extremely difficult. Thousands of firefighters and other emergency services are fighting the floods. The disaster relief forces are working very well, including in all federal states, and the Austrian armed forces are already involved in the amount of 2,400 soldiers," he reported on the social network X (former Twitter).
In addition, ORF writes that army helicopters are being deployed to help, which are dropping sandbags to cover one of the broken dams.
It is noted that about 100 roads are flooded due to the floods, including federal highways and two autobahns near Vienna - the South (A2) and West (A1). In the eastern region, there are interruptions in public transport, including the railway. In Vienna, two metro lines are also partially out of service due to flooding. The authorities are calling on residents to avoid unnecessary trips and walks. Several schools have allowed students to skip classes on Monday.
According to weather forecasters, heavy rains in eastern Austria will continue until at least Tuesday.
Flooding in Poland
As a reminder, Poland is also suffering from flooding. Yesterday, September 15, it became known that a dam on the Moravka River broke due to heavy rains. As a result, the city of Stronie Śląski was flooded.
