"US arms sales to the Chinese region of Taiwan seriously violate the one-China principle. We oppose this and have expressed our strong protest to the US," he said.
In addition, the speaker accused Taiwan of escalating tensions in the Strait of the same name.
"The Taiwan issue is the first red line in Sino-US relations that must not be crossed. We call on the United States to honor its commitment not to support Taiwan's independence and to stop arming it," Xiaogang said.
The one-China principle
The one-China principle states that both Taiwan and mainland China are inseparable parts of a single China.
The One China principle, as enshrined in the "1992 Consensus", is the official position of the PRC government, and has been recognized by the Republic of China at various times, depending on which political party was in power.
According to this "consensus", both governments recognized the existence of only one sovereign state, encompassing the territories of mainland China and Taiwan, but did not decide which of the two governments is the legitimate government of that state.
US-Taiwan Relations
In June, it was reported that the US had approved the sale of missiles and drones to Taiwan for $360 million. This should improve the island's security.
In addition, the US State Department had previously approved the sale of military equipment and spare parts for Taiwan worth about $108 million.
