Respondents have become more favorable toward her since she became the Democratic nominee for president.
When asked about their views of Harris since she became the candidate, 48% of 1,000 registered voters surveyed said they had a favorable view of her, up from 32% in July.
It was the biggest jump in the approval ratings of politicians surveyed by NBC since President George W. Bush's popularity soared after the September 11, 2001, attacks.
When asked about Trump, 40% of respondents said they had a favorable view of him, up from 38% in July. The poll, conducted September 13-17, has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
The results are broadly in line with other recent national polls, including one from Reuters/Ipsos, which show Harris leading 47% to 42% and a tight race heading into the Nov. 5 election.
In addition, a CBS News poll also showed Harris leading Trump by 4 percentage points, 52% to 48% among likely voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
While national polls provide important signals about the views of the electorate, the winner is determined by the Electoral College votes in each state, with several swing states likely to prove decisive.
Harris, 59, a former U.S. senator and prosecutor who is serving as Biden’s vice president, could become the first female president in the country’s 248-year history.
