It would prevent a partial government shutdown starting Oct. 1, when the new budget year begins, and would delay final budget decisions until after the November elections.
The bill also includes an additional $231 million to bolster the Secret Service after two incidents involving Donald Trump’s candidacy. Additional funds would also be allocated to support the presidential election.
It was not an easy compromise to reach. House Speaker Mike Johnson initially proposed tying the stopgap funding to a citizenship requirement to register to vote, but later abandoned that idea to reach an agreement.
The funding has now been extended through mid-December, allowing Congress to finalize next year’s full budget after the Nov. 5 elections. The temporary funding extends the work of government agencies, but the final decision on budget issues will depend on the outcome of the elections and subsequent political calculations.
Leaders of both parties expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached, emphasizing the importance of preventing a government shutdown ahead of the elections.
A shutdown is a condition when part of the US government stops working due to the lack of a new budget.
It should be noted that last year there was a similar situation in the US. Then, the US Congress could not come to an agreement on the 2024 budget since September.
