Some parents encountered difficulties with enrolling their children in schools

In Poland, compulsory school attendance was introduced for Ukrainian children with temporary protection. In this regard, the government predicted that 80 thousand new students from Ukraine would come to schools from September 1. However, about 40 thousand Ukrainian children joined Polish school education. This was reported by the spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Piotr Ostrembsky.

"So far, we can talk about about 40 thousand students from Ukraine. This number, of course, concerns all 16 voivodeships, but each of them has a small number of students. Therefore, schools have no problems accepting students from Ukraine," he noted.

Experts have two versions of why there are fewer Ukrainian children in schools than expected.

"Either there are significantly fewer children from Ukraine in Poland than we think, or some of those children who are in Poland, despite being required to attend school, have not joined the Polish education system since September 1," explained education expert at the Center for Civic Education Jędrzej Witkowski.

At the same time, some parents are having trouble enrolling their children in Polish schools, which is being discussed in Ukrainian social media groups. For example, when schools are full or Ukrainian children are offered to enroll in a class that is two years younger than the one they were supposed to attend.

A total of 178,365 Ukrainians were studying in Polish preschool, primary and secondary education institutions as of July 1. There were 147,755 refugee students from Ukraine in primary and secondary schools. Another 3,0610 children attended kindergartens and preschool preparation centers.

School obligation for Ukrainian children in Poland

The amendments to the special law on assistance to Ukrainians in Poland, which came into force on July 1, stipulate that all children with temporary protection must attend schools in Poland. Until now, parents could choose distance learning in the Ukrainian education system, but now this does not exempt them from school obligation in Poland. Ukrainian refugees who do not enroll their children in school will be deprived of Polish "child" benefits (about 8,000 UAH per month) and may be punished with fines.

The exception to the obligation to attend school in Poland was made only for senior students who will take the NMT.

Recall that we wrote about how Ukrainians in Poland will be fined for children who do not go to school. The Polish Ministry of National Education gave an official explanation of the sanctions for failure to comply with school obligation.

We also talked about the problems that awaited Polish schools with the return of Ukrainian children. The government expected "thousands of individual difficult situations."
