The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell advocates granting Ukraine permission to strike deep into Russia.
He said that the main topics of the meeting of G7 foreign ministers in New York were supporting the country before the approach of winter and avoiding a major humanitarian crisis. "Putin is trying to achieve with the help of an energy collapse what he cannot achieve on the battlefield," Borrell writes.
According to the UN, next winter Ukrainians may face a situation where they will be without electricity for about 20 hours a day. "In a few weeks, a major emergency may arise in Ukraine, which may lead to even more Ukrainians being forced to leave their homes and the country," the EU representative added.
Borrell said that since the beginning of the full-scale war, EU member states have supported Ukraine's energy security in the amount of at least 2 billion euros. According to him, the country needs to be given more air defense systems and interceptors, and also to be given permission to fire on military targets in Russia:
"I also repeated the call to allow Ukraine to fire on airports and launch pads in Russia with Western weapons. Let Ukraine hit the shooters, not just the arrows! Not everyone agrees with this measure yet. However, we have promised to support Ukraine with all possible means for as long as it takes, and the energy front will be decisive this winter."
