This fall, vegetable prices in Ukraine have seriously hit the pocket, and there has been a stir around potatoes. One of the main reasons for the current situation was the weather - high temperatures and lack of precipitation.

"From July to early September, most of the territories of Ukraine either had no precipitation, or it was insufficient. The July heat entailed colossal losses. Due to the drought, a lot was lost, a lot did not sprout. It affected both the vegetables that were grown during this period and the planting of new seeds, for example, cabbage or carrots, which are being harvested now," said Denis Marchuk, deputy of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, in a commentary to the Ekonomicheskaya Pravda publication.

It is noted that even such measures as watering, as well as additional films and nets on greenhouses, did not save the situation.

"Cabbage, perhaps, suffered the most, followed by potatoes and onions in third place with losses. But a lot of onions were planted, so even despite the losses, supply exceeds demand this year," explained the head of the APK-inform: Vegetables and Fruits project, Alexander Khorev.

At the same time, he pointed out that farmers lost from 20% to 50% of potatoes alone, or even more.

In addition, Marchuk noted that many farmers have reoriented themselves to other crops that bring more profit, which also played a role in increasing food prices. In addition, some high-quality vegetables are stored in order to gradually sell them and make money later.

Khorev believes that such a strategy may be a losing one, because in conditions of a deficit, imported goods will enter the market faster. Further growth in vegetable prices is expected until spring.

"We have not yet felt the peak of growth in actual prices. The trend is that in November-December the price offer will grow. Unless there is too much substitution by imports," Marchuk concluded.
