On October 16, 2024, Germany had to scramble its fighter jets. The reason was the Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft.
According to the German Air Force, the Russian plane was flying without radio communication or a flight plan. It was recorded over the international waters of the Baltic Sea.
Because of this, Eurofighter jets took off from Rostock-Laasi airfield to escort the Russian reconnaissance aircraft.
As Deutsche Welle later clarified, the Russian plane was between Rügen, Germany, and Bornholm, Denmark. The German Eurofighters were scrambled to "establish visual contact" with the Il-20.
It is noted that, according to media reports, on average over the past two years in Rostock, fighter jets have been scrambled "every three to four weeks" for similar reasons.
