US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Kiev unexpectedly this morning on an unannounced visit, CNN reports. At the same time, according to The Wall Street Journal, Austin arrived in Kyiv without any major announcements about new military aid or permission to use long-range missiles on Russian territory.
It is noted that Austin will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine's weapons needs and US support over the next year.
Austin's visit will also be a moment for him to "step back" and look at the "arc" of US-Ukraine relations over the past two and a half years of war, according to a Defense Ministry official.
