Germany may review the status of Ukrainian refugees in order to reduce payments to help them and encourage them to find work. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner made a corresponding proposal.

"We must consider a separate legal status for refugees from Ukraine," he said in an interview with the magazine Wirtschafts Woche.

Lindner proposes leaving the status of asylum recipients for Ukrainians, but without automatic accrual of financial assistance for living.

"Ukrainians should not have to go through the asylum procedure because of the war in their country. On the other hand, they should not immediately receive assistance," the minister proposes.

As the newspaper Die Welt notes, refugees from Ukraine receive general civil assistance in Germany, which, for example, for single people is 563 euros per month. Assistance for rent and heating, as well as for medical care, is accrued separately.

Lindner wants to radically change the approach to calculating such assistance. In his opinion, the state should reimburse beneficiaries for housing costs at a fixed rate, and not at actual costs.

"Then beneficiaries can decide whether they want to move to a smaller apartment and how to heat it. I believe that we can save billions of euros here," says the minister.
