The team of newly elected US President Donald Trump is discussing the possibility of holding direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump hopes that a new diplomatic push could reduce the risk of armed conflict.
This was reported to Reuters by two people familiar with the matter. It is noted that "political discussions are fluid, and the president-elect has not made any final decisions." Trump's transition team did not respond to a request for comment.
It is not yet clear what Kim might offer in response to Trump. For the past four years, North Korea has ignored calls from US President Joe Biden to start talks without preconditions. In addition, the DPRK leader is "encouraged" by the expansion of the missile arsenal and rapprochement with Russia. Last week, Kim Jong-un said that North Korea "went as far as it could in negotiations with the United States."
Trump met personally with Kim during his last term, but their diplomacy failed to produce results. The U.S. called on North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, while the North Korean leader demanded full sanctions relief and then made new threats.
But relations with North Korea may now take a back seat for the Trump administration, at least for a while, amid the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.
The agency also noted that North Korean state media has yet to publicly mention Trump’s reelection. At the same time, Kim Jong-un said this month that the United States is escalating tensions and provocations, raising the risk of nuclear war.
