Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that a quick end to the war in Ukraine without territorial losses is unrealistic and that Kyiv may have to give up the occupied territories in order to achieve peace.
According to Welt, he notes that such a decision would be "temporary".
"If the ceasefire line means that Russia continues to control all the occupied territories, this does not mean that Ukraine should give up the territory forever," Stoltenberg said.
At the same time, he stressed that it is important that Ukraine receive security guarantees in exchange for the temporary cession of territory. This could be NATO membership, but there are also "other ways to arm and support Ukrainians."
Stoltenberg supported the demand of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to cede any territories to Russia in the event of a ceasefire, but considers this unlikely due to the military situation in Ukraine.
"We need a ceasefire line, and of course, this line should ideally include all the territories that Russia currently controls. However, we see that this is not entirely realistic in the near future," the former NATO Secretary General said.
