In Syria, rebels captured a Russian Podlet-K1 radar surveillance system near the city of Hama. This equipment was in service with the 25th Special Forces Division, formerly known as the Tiger, an elite unit that is considered one of the most effective in Bashar al-Assad's troops, The Telegraph writes.
The publication noted that the low-altitude radar surveillance system can track up to 200 targets simultaneously, especially those flying low. In addition, the Podlet-K1 is important both for local air defense and for Russia's internal defense against Ukrainian attacks.
"The loss of the $5 million radar system is also worrying Russia, as there is a risk it could fall into Western hands, jeopardising the country's air defences amid growing attacks from Ukraine," the report added.
The Podlet-K1 radar can also detect Storm Shadow cruise missiles and Ukrainian Neptunes.
The Telegraph recalled that Ukraine launched its first Storm Shadow missile into Russia in late November after Britain gave it permission to use them outside of Ukraine.
"While Ukraine says it has destroyed several Podlet-K1 systems, it has not captured any of them. The radar is of potential interest to Kyiv supporters amid concerns about a decline in US aid under Donald Trump's presidency," the authors of the article believe.
