The start of 2025 has been marked by heightened geopolitical tensions and a transformation of the positions of key players on the world stage. The new US President Donald Trump has dramatically changed the tone regarding the war in Ukraine, which has already caused serious concern in the Kremlin, writes columnist Francis Dearnley in an article for The Telegraph.

For Russians, the Year of the Snake has symbolic significance due to its association with major historical upheavals such as revolutions, wars and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the beginning of this year, the Kremlin has faced a number of internal and external challenges, in particular economic exhaustion due to the war and pressure from the international community.

Even during his campaign, Trump had been cautious about the war in Ukraine, often emphasizing his "good relationship" with Putin and criticizing NATO. But after his inauguration, the tone changed dramatically. Trump directly called Russia the weaker party in the conflict:

"I think Putin is destroying Russia. Their economy is in shambles, and their losses on the front lines are enormous."

This statement was accompanied by a warning to Moscow: either Putin negotiates an end to the war, or the US will impose tougher economic sanctions, including tariffs and restrictions on Russian energy exports.

"Now that Trump's term begins, the Kremlin is starting to taste the poison. Trump is not a man who takes the side of the losers, and, importantly, he sees Moscow as a loser and defeated," Dearnley writes.
