Candidate for the post of next German chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a tougher position regarding transatlantic relations. In particular, he expressed concern about the political influence of American billionaire Elon Pask ahead of the national elections in Germany, which will be held on February 23, writes Politico.

In an interview with Berliner Morgenpost, Merz said that he plans to raise the issue of Musk's promotion of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with US President Donald Trump.

"I have a clear opinion on this matter too - and I will share it with him: I do not approve of attempts by someone from Trump's orbit to carry out such direct interference in the elections in Germany," the politician emphasized.

The publication recalled that since the beginning of the early election campaign, Musk has openly supported AfD. In particular, he wrote positive reviews about the party on his page on the X social network, held a live broadcast with the party's leader Alice Weidel and criticized traditional mainstream parties.

At the same time, the German government accused Musk of interfering in the elections and normalizing extremism.

In addition, trade is another issue that Merz wants to raise. It is known that Trump has repeatedly raised tariffs on European goods, so the German politician made it clear that his country will not put up with this.

"We will not put up with tariffs that are introduced for political reasons. If Trump does this, Europe must react. I do not want a trade war, but if necessary, we will defend ourselves with our own tariffs," he assured.

Merz also commented on the possible reduction of US support for Ukraine:

"I hope that we will not get into such a situation. We must convince the American government that supporting Ukraine is in its own interests." According to the politician, he plans to hold his first conversation with Trump in the format of an "open discussion."
