US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian dictator Putin to begin talks to end the war and assured that he would continue to help Ukraine, otherwise "Putin would think he'd won."
"We'll do this as long as it takes because we don't want anything else to happen, but Putin wants peace right now," Trump said, according to Voice of America.
After phone calls with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump said that the date of the meeting with the head of the Kremlin has not yet been determined, but meetings will take place "both here and there." And the first talks will probably take place in Saudi Arabia in the "not too distant future."
"We'll meet in Saudi Arabia first, see if we can do anything. But we want to end this war. This war is a disaster, a really terrible one," the American president expressed his opinion.
In this regard, he detailed that after listening to Zelensky and Putin, he concluded that both want the war to end with a long-term peace and not resume later.
"... I think we'll probably reach a ceasefire at some point in the not-too-distant future," Trump predicted.
When asked whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would take part in the meeting, Trump replied: "We'll have the first meeting first. And then we'll see what we can do about the second meeting." Trump added that he sees Zelensky involved in the negotiation process, but hinted that this will not be the case all the time, since elections will need to be held in Ukraine. "At some point, you also need to have elections," Trump added.
He once again reiterated his opinion that Ukraine is obliged to conclude a peace agreement and should not have gotten involved in a war with Russia in the first place. "They need to make peace. Their people are being killed and they need to make peace," Trump replied.
Responding to a question about whether Ukraine will have to cede territory, Trump replied: "They will have to do what needs to be done."
He also added that his visit to Kyiv is not currently planned, but if he were invited, he would think about it. "I would think about going, no problem," he commented.
