Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was visiting Ankara, while in Saudi Arabia, representatives of the US and Russia gathered to discuss the war in Ukraine.

According to The Telegraph, it was impossible not to suspect that the Ukrainian president's mood was gloomy and his thoughts were elsewhere. "For the first time since the war began in February 2022, Zelensky has found himself on the sidelines," the newspaper wrote.

The newspaper noted that there were signs that his influence in the West was weakening even before Donald Trump's election victory. When the Ukrainian president visited Capitol Hill in September 2024, he found it difficult to meet with influential officials.

But this week, his neglect was on full display. "As the Ukrainian president climbed the steps of Ataturk's tomb, his country's future was being mapped out in Riyadh, where a US delegation met the Russians for the first time to discuss ending the war," the newspaper stated.

The journalists noted that the first news from the summit suggests that there is a good reason why the Russians and Americans did not invite Zelensky to the discussions. "Both delegations agreed to the idea of holding elections in Ukraine before any peace deal is signed," the newspaper wrote.

The Telegraph emphasized that eliminating Zelensky is the main goal of Russian dictator Putin, since no one has done more to thwart the Kremlin's ambitions to enslave Ukraine and break its spirit. "The fact that the FSB special services of the Russian Federation failed to kill him is considered a disgrace. The best hope, as the Kremlin now believes, is to push for elections, interfere in them in the usual way and install a pro-Moscow puppet who will sign a humiliating peace agreement that Zelensky will certainly refuse," the journalists explained the outcome.

But this is where the attempts to remove Zelensky run into difficulties. It is not as easy for Russia to influence the Ukrainian elections now as it was before the war. "The majority of the population spits at the mention of Putin's name. Hatred cannot be provoked by disinformation. The most pro-Moscow strata of the Ukrainian population live in the Donbas, which is already occupied by the Russians and, therefore, is not able to take part in the Ukrainian electoral process," the publication stated.
