After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was excluded from the first US-Russia talks on ending the war, US President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine for starting the conflict that has destroyed its lands and claimed thousands of lives.
In his most hostile statements yet against the Ukrainian leader, Trump repeated another thesis of Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin - about the need to hold elections in Ukraine - apparently seeking to start the process of eliminating Zelensky, writes CNN.
These comments are reportedly causing new concerns in Europe.
Journalists emphasize that Trump is now busy obfuscating the reasons for the start of the war in Ukraine. In particular, during a press conference after US-Russia talks, he said that Ukraine "should never have started" this war 3 years ago.
In effect, the president is hinting that Ukraine should have reached an agreement with Russia to avoid an invasion — which would have meant installing a puppet government loyal to Moscow in Kyiv, or capitulating, which would have been a victory for Putin, the media writes.
Trump's response to the Saudi Arabia talks has reinforced the already significant advantage of the Russian side. Trump's words also seem to directly contradict the assurances of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who after meeting with the Russian delegation claimed that any peace agreement would be fair for all parties.
"Trump's attack on Zelensky, who was praised in the United States as a hero for resisting Russia's blitzkrieg on Kyiv at the beginning of the war, is a clear example of how the new American administration has turned Washington's policy on its head — from supporting the victim of the invasion to encouraging the aggressor," the article says.
