A US delegation will seek progress on a ceasefire in the Black Sea and a broader end to violence in Ukraine at a meeting with Russian officials.
According to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the situation, the US side will be led by Andrew Peak, a senior director at the White House National Security Council, and Michael Anton, a senior State Department official.
"They met with the Ukrainians on Sunday evening and plan to meet with the Russians on Monday," the publication wrote.
The White House announced that the goal of the talks is to achieve a ceasefire in the Black Sea to resume free shipping.
Reuters added that the US hopes to achieve a broad ceasefire in Ukraine within weeks, intending to conclude a ceasefire agreement by April 20.
The Russian Federation will be represented by Grigory Karasin, a former diplomat who is now the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Sergei Beseda, an adviser to the director of the Federal Security Service (FSB). As Bild noted, Putin sent not the foreign minister to these negotiations, but intelligence officer Sergei Beseda, the former head of the FSB's Fifth Service. He was the one responsible for preparing the attack on Ukraine - and failed completely. Beseda assured Putin that resistance in Ukraine would be minimal, and the Russian Federation would take the country in a matter of days.
