The presence of a European military contingent in Ukraine without the participation of the United States of America will effectively be the end of NATO.

This was stated in an interview with Politico by the former German ambassador to the United States and chairman of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger. In his opinion, Moscow will under no circumstances agree to the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine, but even if soldiers are sent, it is worth insisting on America's involvement:

"It may happen that the Russian side will conduct an inspection and say that the Ukrainians have started some kind of shooting, and they must respond to this. And therefore, the Europeans in Ukraine may be under fire, and they will have to respond, engage in battle without the participation of the United States. Frankly, this will be the end of NATO as we know it."

The diplomat believes that in this way Russia will divide the States and Europe, which is not yet capable of defending itself from war. According to him, the policy of the new White House administration has become an "electric" shock to Europe.

"We now understand that we actually need to stand on our own feet much, much better, both in terms of military capabilities and in terms of political strategy," he noted.

At the same time, Ischinger is confident that over time, Donald Trump's team will understand that it needs Europe's help in difficult national security issues and will return to cooperation:

"Has the approach of simply distancing Europe, refusing to talk to Europe, talking to Russia about Ukraine without Europe, talking to Tehran about the nuclear issue without Europe, led to any visible success? As far as I can tell, no."
