Since the start of the "I want to live" project, about 4.5 thousand requests have been received from Russians regarding voluntary surrender to Ukrainian captivity.

Vitaly Matviyenko, speaker of the coordinating headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war, announced this on the air of an information telethon.

"Since September, since the start of the project, the number of applications is about 4.5 thousand. Approximately 70 to 100 applications per day. We are contacted by relatives of those who can be mobilized or have already been mobilized. We are contacted by already mobilized and not yet mobilized And there is also an appeal from the regular military of the Russian Federation," Matvienko said.

He noted that the increased responsibility in Russia for surrender does not stop those who want to surrender.

"Ukraine takes into account the fact that Russia has increased responsibility for voluntary surrender, therefore, all Russian servicemen who voluntarily surrender are registered by our side as those who were taken prisoner during the battle. This guarantees such prisoners, after they return to Russia that they will not be persecuted and all payments will be kept,” the speaker said.

According to him, those who surrender themselves decide whether they want to quickly return back through the exchange fund.

“They may decide to return after the victory of Ukraine over Russia, they may apply for asylum in Ukraine, but they go through a certain procedure, where it turns out whether this soldier is involved in any war crimes ... He can also ask for asylum in European countries, such like Germany and the Netherlands," Matvienko said.
