The United States and Germany have agreed to send M2 Bradley armored fighting vehicles and a second Patriot anti-aircraft missile battery to Ukraine.
The announcement was made in a joint statement by US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz following a phone call on Thursday. According to an official informed about the amount of assistance, 50 cars will be sent to Ukraine, the New York Times specifies.
Taking into account the previously announced deliveries of the German Marder infantry fighting vehicles, Ukraine will receive Western-made infantry fighting vehicles for the first time. A day earlier, France announced that it would send AMX-10 RC armored reconnaissance vehicles of its own production to Kyiv.
Although Germany still refuses to give Ukraine its main Leopard 2 tank, the decision to provide 40 Marder IFVs at once is progress for Berlin, which has resisted calls for tanks or combat vehicles for months. However, Kyiv had previously received armored personnel carriers, a Gepard mobile anti-aircraft gun, and an IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile system from the Scholz government.
