Russia's war against Ukraine: police found more than 16.5 thousand dead in ten regions

As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 16.5 thousand people died, more than a thousand bodies were exhumed from mass graves.

This is stated in response to an information request from ZMINA to the Main Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine.

"In 2022, as a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, 16,502 people died. The National Police discovered 21 mass graves in the de-occupied territories, of which 1,033 civilian and military bodies were exhumed," the police said in a statement.

According to the National Police, most of the dead were found in Donetsk region - 4746 people, in Kharkiv region - 3784, in Mykolaiv region - 2207, in Kyiv region - 2072, in Chernihiv region - 899, in Luhansk region - 815, in Kherson region - 686, in Sumy region - 341, Zhytomyr - 283, in Zaporozhye - 66.

21 mass graves were found in the liberated territories, of which in the Donetsk region - three (278 civilians and 37 military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were exhumed), Kyiv - 14 (177 people were exhumed), Kharkiv - two (451 civilians and 44 military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were exhumed), two (exhumed 46 people).

"Of the indicated number, most of the bodies have gunshot wounds and mine-explosive injuries (it is impossible to indicate the exact number of such persons due to the non-completion of expert studies assigned to establish the causes of death)," the response to the request says.

The Main Investigation Department noted that they do not keep records of the number of deaths found as a result of the invasion in buildings and on the streets of the liberated territories.
