Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that Japan will provide Ukraine with a new $5.5 billion financial aid package.
Kishida, speaking at a global forum in Tokyo, also said he would mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine by hosting an online G7 summit with President Volodymyr Zelensky, writes TheGuardian.
As chair of this year's G7 summit, Japan is preparing to host the meeting online on February 24. Kishida is hosting the G7 summit for the first time.
It is expected that at the summit the leaders of the G7 will reaffirm their unity in the fight against Russian aggression against Ukraine and declare their continued support.
Japan joined the EU and the US in imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion and providing humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine.
Kishida said Japan reacted quickly because of "great concern that Ukraine could become East Asia tomorrow."
