Russia is trying to compensate for the loss of equipment with old models. Recently, the BTR-50 was identified at the front, which entered service in 1954. And the 60-year-old T-62s will be used even in the main tank army of the Russian Federation.

British intelligence shared these conclusions in a recent report on the war in Ukraine. It said: “In response to the loss of heavy armored vehicles, the Russian military continues to deploy 60-year-old T-62 main battle tanks (MBTs). There is a real possibility that even units of the 1st Guards Tank Army (1st GTA), which, as assumed to be the main tank formation of Russia, will be re-equipped with T-62s to make up for previous losses. 1 GTA was previously supposed to receive a new generation T-14 Armata tank from 2021."

According to experts, since the summer of 2022, Russia has reopened 800 T-62 units. Some tanks were equipped with modernized sighting systems, which could increase the effectiveness of the use of equipment at night. And recently in Ukraine it was possible to identify the BTR-50 used by the occupiers. This armored personnel carrier was first put into service in 1954.

"However, both of these vintage vehicle types will have many vulnerabilities on the modern battlefield, including the lack of modern blast-proof armor," British intelligence added.
