The President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, called on Western partners and the public not to criticize President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for his harsh comments about the ongoing discussions regarding Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Nauseda stated this during a NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius during a conversation with reporters. According to him, one should refrain from criticizing the statements of the president of the country in which the war is going on. At the same time, he stressed the importance of carrying out reforms in the future, which are necessary for Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
Recently, the President of Ukraine allowed himself a number of rather harsh and critical statements about the leadership of the NATO countries and the bloc itself. according to him, at the summit in Vilnius, without the participation of Ukraine, the formulation of the conditions for Ukraine's entry into the alliance is discussed. He also stated that it was unprecedented and absurd that Ukraine was not given, according to him, no time frame, both for the invitation to join NATO and for membership in it. He argued the reason for such a reaction of the allies by their unwillingness to accept Ukraine.
On July 12, during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Volodymyr Zelensky softened his rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of the NATO summit canceling the implementation of the mandatory conditions of the action plan for membership in the alliance.
