Hungarian President Katalin Novak agreed to the appointment of a new Ukrainian ambassador, professor of the Uzhgorod National University, soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Fedor Shandor.
According to the Hungarian TV channel ATV, the signed Novak agrément will be handed over to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry for approval by Minister Peter Szijjártó. The decision will be published after Sandor's arrival in Budapest and presentation of his credentials to the head of state.
According to media reports, Kyiv sent a request for an agrément for Shandor to official Budapest back in March, but Hungary approved it only now.
According to media reports, the reason for this situation was the alleged unwillingness of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to conduct a dialogue with his Hungarian counterpart.
Why exactly the Hungarian side has now changed its position is not specified. But according to ATV, Novak is scheduled to visit Kiev on August 23 to attend the Crimean Platform summit, and before that she will travel to Transcarpathia, where she will meet with the Hungarian minority.
As the head of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE, Maria Mezentseva, commented, the choice fell on Shandor, since Kyiv wants to send an ambassador to Budapest, who has Hungarian roots. She noted that the Ukrainian government was primarily looking not for a diplomat, but for a person who has good linguistic and cultural ties with the country, has good professional training and is able to conduct serious negotiations.
