It is reported that the Smilyansk District Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit with the economic court on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine against the executive committee of the Kanev City Council, as well as the Kiev Metropolis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, to cancel the decision and certificate of ownership, as well as the return of state property in the form non-residential building of the Assumption Cathedral at G. Kanev, Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred street, 62.
It is known that in 1965 the Assumption Cathedral of St. George was recognized as an archeological monument of republican significance and was under state protection. after that, in 2009, the Cabinet of Ministers of already independent Ukraine recognized the cathedral as an architectural monument of national importance and then entered into the state register of immovable monuments of Ukraine. but despite this, the executive committee of the Kanev City Council gave permission for the ownership of the architectural monument of the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Also, the cathedral is notable for the fact that it was in it that a memorial service was served for the outstanding Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko, who was originally wanted to be buried within the walls of this particular cathedral.
