In the Zaporozhye region, against the background of the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the losses of the Russian occupiers increased significantly. Apparently, the invaders could face a shortage of combat-ready units that the command could transfer to this section of the front.
As reported in a report by ISW analysts, on September 18, in the Tauride direction, which includes the west of Zaporozhye, the Russian Federation lost 313 military personnel in one day. This far exceeded previous losses, when the Defense Forces killed 200 enemy soldiers a day.
Defensive operations in this sector of the front are being carried out by the Russian Airborne Forces, while Storm-Z detachments with conscripted prisoners arrived to “cover” the units. It is noted that the Russians may need this in case of a possible withdrawal.
Previously, elements of the Russian 7th Guards Mountain Rifle Division and the 76th Guards VAT Division conducted counterattacks against the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Rabotinoy area (10 km south of Orekhov), and these operations likely greatly weakened these airborne forces.
Storm-Z units “are often ineffective in combat and are likely to provide Russian defenses in the western Zaporozhye region with little combat power,” the report adds.
