The attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol on September 22, which resulted in the liquidation of the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Viktor Sokolov, was helped to prepare by disgruntled Russian officers.

As the partisan movement in Crimea (ATESH) told the Kyiv Post, the partisans received key information about the whereabouts and activities of high-ranking Russian commanders from Russian officers in exchange for financial rewards.

“Moscow’s failure to pay its military personnel on time played a key role in last week’s devastating missile attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” the publication notes.

ATES stated that delays in payments in themselves do not force Russian military personnel to go against the Russian authorities, since those who help them also believe that their country is “waging a criminal war and that this must be stopped.”

At the same time, it is noted that financial reward “helps them decide to cooperate with the ATESH movement, it serves as an additional incentive.”

ATES did not specify the size of the financial reward, but said it was enough to cover the risks for the officers and their families.
