A Kurdish militant group has claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack in Ankara, which left two attackers dead.

According to Reuters and ANF News, citing a statement by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, the explosion was a "suicide attack" planned for the opening of parliament and carried out by "our group, which is associated with the Battalion of Immortals."

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. It began fighting in southeastern Turkey in 1984, and more than 40,000 people were killed during the conflict.

In response to the terrorist attack, Turkey conducted a military air operation in northern Iraq on the evening of October 1 to strike Kurdish militants.

"Turkish armed forces hit caves, hideouts, and warehouses in the Metina, Hakurk, Qandil and Gara regions of northern Iraq, which the agency believes are controlled by terrorists associated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK). Total 20 targets were destroyed,” the Turkish Ministry of National Defense reports on social networks.

The country did this in accordance with the right of self-defense, which is provided for in Article 5 of the UN Charter, to stop terrorist attacks and secure its border.

“For the survival and security of our country and nation, the fight against terrorism will continue resolutely until there is not a single terrorist left,” the ministry stressed.

The department assured that Turkey has taken all measures to avoid damage to civil, historical and cultural values, as well as the environment.
