The most generous sponsor of Hamas militants is Iran, which provided them with the most important resources needed to carry out terrorist attacks. But it is not only thanks to the Iranian side that the budget of the attackers is filled.
American investigators found that Hamas was financed by online donors who sent them cryptocurrency, CNN reports. It is noted that to publish the addresses of crypto wallets so that people would make donations to them, the militants used the social networks X (Twitter), as well as Facebook.
According to journalists, even before the Hamas attack on Israel, Justice Department officials in Washington were investigating the use of “cryptocurrency” by members of this organization through people who were involved in money laundering.
The details of the case were revealed by lawyers from the US Department of Justice. It is reported that we are talking about cryptocurrency accounts that US authorities decided to confiscate three years ago. As of May, the case was pending.
In addition, private analysts reported that Israeli authorities have confiscated cryptocurrency addresses (a unique string of numbers and letters in a cryptocurrency wallet) worth tens of millions of dollars for alleged ties to Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups.
CNN notes that the use of "crypto" is just one of many ways that Hamas militants use to supplement their budget.
