President of Azerbaijan Raises National Flag in Nagorno-Karabakh

In a historic move, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan raised the national flag of the Azerbaijan Republic in the city of Hankendi, located in the heart of Nagorno-Karabakh. The event, which took place on October 15th, was accompanied by a speech by President Aliyev, signifying a critical development in the ongoing conflict in the region. This momentous occasion was reported by Ukrinform, citing the president's press service.
President Aliyev's visit extended beyond Hankendi; he also visited other towns and settlements in the region, including Agdere, Khojali, Karkijahan, and Malibeyli. This visit underscores Azerbaijan's efforts to assert control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The recent series of events began when the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced on September 19th that it would initiate "local anti-terrorism measures" in Karabakh. Azerbaijan called for the withdrawal of Armenian forces from its territory and the dissolution of the "separatist regime" in Hankendi (also known as Stepanakert, within the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh).
The Azerbaijani military launched an operation to regain control of the region, and following this, the self-proclaimed president of Nagorno-Karabakh, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree stating that the "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic" would cease to exist from January 1, 2024.
The conflict has led to the displacement of over 100,000 people from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. On October 3, Baku unveiled a plan for the reintegration of the Karabakh region's residents.
