Meta has announced the removal of content that praises or supports Hamas from its platforms. This decision follows the European Union's critique of social media networks for their insufficient handling of disinformation.

In addition, Meta is temporarily expanding its policies on countering violence and incitement, promptly removing content that clearly identifies hostages held by Hamas, even if shared with the intention of condemning or raising awareness about their situation. Content with blurred images of abduction victims is still allowed, but the company vows to prioritize the safety and privacy of these hostages.

Meta has also expressed its awareness of Hamas's threats to broadcast videos featuring hostages and vows to swiftly remove any such content while preventing its re-distribution.

The company is actively working to ensure that content potentially violating these rules is not recommended on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Although Hamas is prohibited on these platforms, Meta allows social and political discourse, such as news reports and discussions related to human rights or any other relevant topics.

Just three days after the attack, Meta reported that it had removed or flagged over 795,000 messages in Hebrew or Arabic as sensitive content.

The European Commission demands that social media platforms remove illegal and harmful content in accordance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), violations of which may lead to substantial fines.
