An Australian regulator has fined Elon Musk's social network X (Twitter) $386,000 for refusing to cooperate with a child abuse investigation.
According to Reuters, the eSafety Commission fined X, saying she failed to answer questions about child abuse material on the platform and the methods she used to detect it.
Although small, the fine is a reputational blow for the company, which has seen revenue fall steadily as advertisers cut spending on the platform, which has stopped moderating most content and reinstated thousands of banned accounts.
Under Australian laws coming into force in 2021, the regulator could force internet companies to provide information about their online safety practices or face fines. If X refuses to pay the fine, the regulator may sue the company.
In addition, the European Union recently said it was investigating X for possible violations of its new technology rules after the platform was accused of failing to curb disinformation about a Hamas attack on Israel.
