The United States, Japan and South Korea on Sunday conducted joint trilateral air exercises near the Korean Peninsula for the first time in history, after the countries had previously only conducted bilateral exercises.
According to South Korean publication Yonhap, the exercises were part of joint efforts to strengthen defense cooperation amid the growing missile and nuclear threat from North Korea.
It is noted that fighter jets from the South Korean Air Force, the US Air Force and the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force, which accompanied the American B-52 strategic bomber, took part in the exercises.
A US nuclear bomber landed at a South Korean air base on Tuesday after making a memorable flight at a defense exhibition in Seongnam, near Seoul.
“The deployment of an American B-52 strategic bomber to South Korea for reasons other than participation in joint military exercises is considered rare,” the publication notes.
