The film, a joint production of Ukraine and France, unfolds the dramatic history of the Jewish settlement on the border of Ukraine and Poland, in Lviv. The entire film encompasses a single day, June 21, 1941, on the eve of the fascist invasion of Ukraine.
The historical drama "SHTEIL" is the first Ukrainian film shot using the single-shot technique (where viewers do not see any editing cuts), in collaboration with French partners. The film runs for 114 minutes and is created in monochromatic tones, as noted by the State Film Agency.
Specially constructed for the shoot, the team built an entire town in the Kyiv region, in the village of Rovzhi. They erected 18 structures, including a market square and a Jewish cemetery with stone tombstones.
Furthermore, six authentic 100-year-old wooden houses from the Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions were transported to the newly constructed town.
The recreated wooden synagogue was meticulously painted by artist-restorers according to preserved sketches, adhering to religious canons. The agency emphasized that in the future, the film crew plans to hand over the location to the local community, which can transform it into a museum.
The film was created with the support of the State Film Agency of Ukraine, Ukrainian Producers Hub, Forecast Pictures in partnership with Apple Tree Vision.
