In a viral video circulating on social media, it has come to light that Roblox users are staging protests to show solidarity with Palestine. Journalists from CNBC, who registered on the virtual platform, confirmed that participants in the protest could choose between raising either the Palestinian or Malaysian flags virtually, or opt to be without a flag.
According to publicly available data from December 2022, approximately 45% of Roblox users are children under the age of 12, while 60% are 16 or younger. Only 17% of users are 25 years old or older.
A representative from Roblox confirmed to CNBC that the new experience "has indeed emerged on the platform," adding that the protest depicted in the viral videos was one of many pro-Palestinian protests on Roblox that the company is aware of.
"While our community standards allow for expressing solidarity, we do not tolerate content that approves or justifies violence, promotes terrorism or hatred towards individuals or groups, or calls for support of a specific political party," stated the Roblox representative in an interview with CNBC. "We have a team of thousands of moderators as well as automated detection tools to monitor our platform, and we will take swift action against any content or individuals who violate our standards," the representative added.
