Ukrainian director Philip Sotnychenko's ironic detective film, "La Palisade," has received a prestigious nomination for the European Film Academy Award. This recognition places the film in contention for the "Discovery of the Year" category and the coveted FIPRESCI Prize. The winners of this esteemed award will be announced during the 36th European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin on December 9.
The plot of "La Palisade" unfolds in Ukraine during the year 1996. The film follows the story of two old friends, a police detective, and a forensic psychiatrist, who find themselves investigating the murder of a colleague just five months before the moratorium on the death penalty. Long ago, both were in love with the widow of the deceased. Immersed in a complex case and long-forgotten memories, these friends set out to shape a future where their children inherit the unrealized dreams of their parents.
The eagerly anticipated "La Palisade" will hit the big screens on January 11, 2024. This film was made possible with support from the State Cinema. It is the brainchild of director and screenwriter Philip Sotnychenko, a member of the Ukrainian Film Academy.
The cast includes Andriy Zhurba, Novruz Pashayev, Oleksandr Parkhomenko, Valeriya Oleynikova, Olena Mamchur, Oleksandr Maliyev, Stepan Barabash, Serhiy Luzanovsky, Oleksandr Mavrits, Yarema Malashchuk, and Sana Shakhmuradova.
"La Palisade" made its mark at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina, competing in the category of full-length narrative films. The film brought home the festival's highest honor, the "Heart of Sarajevo," for the best direction. The cinematography of the film, helmed by Volodymyr Usyk, also earned recognition at the Ukraina Festiwal Filmowy in Warsaw.
