The price hike in Ukraine's potato market has caught the attention of both consumers and farmers. The sudden rise in prices can be attributed to high demand and a reduced supply of this essential staple, as most regions in the country are concluding their harvesting campaigns. Furthermore, many major producers are withholding potato sales, exacerbating the price surge. Farmers report that this season has seen a high percentage of subpar produce, which is unsuitable for long-term storage.

As of November 8, 2023, according to EastFruit data, the average price of potatoes in Ukraine has increased by a staggering 46% compared to the same period last year. The majority of producers plan to continue raising prices for quality potatoes.

It's worth noting that the surge in potato prices began in Ukraine in late October 2023. In the last week of October, potato prices escalated to 7-10 UAH/kg ($0.19-0.27/kg), marking the beginning of this unexpected trend.
