The Buch Wien book fair is taking place in Vienna, becoming a literary phenomenon in the Austrian book industry. Opening its doors to visitors for the first time, this event invites well-known Austrian and international authors for the 15th time. Organizers describe it as a five-day celebration of language, literature, and knowledge, reflecting Vienna's cosmopolitan character. With six fairgrounds and numerous locations throughout Vienna, it is the epicenter of culture, communication, and inspiration.
This year's Buch Wien program includes over 350 discussions, panel debates, and lectures with the participation of 439 authors and experts from 25 different countries. Additionally, around 112 events are designed for children and teenagers, making it a family-friendly event.
Within Buch Wien, numerous high-level events dedicated to current global issues are taking place.
The event started with a "Long Night of Books," and the honorary guest was British author, stand-up comedian, and scientist A.L. Kennedy. In her opening speech, she touched on the art of beginning with Scottish humor, sharp social analysis, and vibrant rhetoric.
On Thursday, November 9, there will be a panel discussion titled "In Search of Ukraine," presenting two new books: "The Liberated Sphinx - Ukrainica in Vienna after World War I," released in cooperation with Lviv University under the guidance of Professor Aloiz Voldan from the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna, and the anthology "Galicia" titled "Homecoming," published by the Austrian Library in Drohobych and its director Yaroslav Lopushansky. Both publications became possible thanks to the support of the OeAD Cooperation Office in Lviv.
On November 11, a panel discussion on the topic "Bloody Lands - Will the War in Ukraine Decide the Fate of Europe?" will take place, featuring Ukrainian poet and translator Hanna Hnedkova, Austrian political scientist Anton Pelinka, and former British Ambassador to Ukraine and Austria, Lee Turner.
On Sunday, November 12, a conversation with Ukrainian author Natalia Chaikovska will take place at the book fair, along with the presentation of the German translation of her book "Porcelain Doll," translated into German as "All Women Who Survived Here."
This literary event continues to be an important gathering that brings together literature, art, and discussions on current global issues.
