The European Union has wrapped up its first decade, spanning from 2013 to 2023, without any expansion, as confirmed by the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova. During a joint press conference with Vice-Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanišina, held at the Ukraine Media Center, Maternova pointed out the critical elements necessary for expansion – political will and technical capabilities on both sides. She highlighted that when any of these elements is lacking, the process can be significantly delayed.

Maternova acknowledged that while the EU experienced a lack of reforms and political will during this period, the people of Ukraine and the steep price they have paid have driven the impetus for EU expansion. She believes that as long as Ukraine continues to manage technical aspects efficiently, it will advance the Eurointegration process.

The European Commission has released its annual report on EU expansion, recommending that the European Council initiate negotiations on expansion with Ukraine and Moldova.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the European Commission's decision, describing it as a significant step in the right direction for Ukraine and all of Europe.

Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal officially received the European Commission's report on Ukraine within the framework of the EU expansion package from EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova.
