The 78-year-old former politician was walking on the street and about to get into his car when an unknown assailant on a black Yamaha motorcycle shot him. Reports indicate that the armed man, accompanied by another person, fled the scene on the motorcycle, going the wrong way on a one-way street.

According to the police spokesperson, the ex-politician was conscious when taken to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, and his life is not in danger. The motives behind the attack are still unknown, and the police are actively searching for the attacker.

Spain's acting Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his "solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery" for Vidal Quadras.

Vidal Quadras, once the head of the conservative People's Party of Spain in Catalonia in the 1990s, served as the Vice President of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2014. In 2013, he became one of the founders of the far-right party Vox but left after an unsuccessful attempt to secure a seat in the European Parliament in 2014.
